The city of Minnetonka is located about 8 miles west of Minneapolis in Hennepin County. In 1852, the first settlement was established at the current Minnetonka Mills site on Minnetonka Boulevard along Minnehaha Creek. A furniture factory located there became the largest business center in Hennepin County. Grays Bay is named for carpenter Amos N. Gray who there in 1852. James Shaver staked out the first claim of land on Lake Minnetonka at Grays Bay. His twin sons were born in 1853 and were said to be the first white children born in the area. Shaver built the first store and the first steam sawmill. The Minnehaha Creek runs about 20 miles from Grays Bay to the Mississippi. Lake Minnetonka’s water levels are controlled by a dam that was originally built in 1897. The three primary school districts include the Hopkins School District, the Minnetonka School District, and the Wayzata School District.
