Welcome to Orono
The city of Orono is located about 20 miles west of the city of Minneapolis on US Highway 12. Orono is located in Hennepin County near the north shore of Lake Minnetonka. Orono was originally part of Excelsior township. The township of Orono was created on April 9, 1889. Its namesake is Major George Brackett who came to the Lake Minnetonka area from Orono, Maine. He settled on the area known as Bracketts Point in 1880. Brackett founded Minneapolis’ first fire department and was also the city’s mayor. The city has many parks and is home to the Orono Public Golf Course, which was founded in 1924. It was the first public golf course with grass greens in the state of Minnesota. The Orono School District has one elementary school, one intermediate school, one middle school and one high school. All of the schools are located along the same road.
