Welcome to Wayzata
Wayzata is located in Hennepin County on the shore of Lake Minnetonka. It is located about 11 miles west of the city of Minneapolis. In 1853, Oscar E. Garrison and A.B. Robinson established the city. Wayzata is the Dakota word for “north shore.” The city grew when the railroad came to the area twice a day from Minneapolis. Wayzata is rich in history and has a thriving business district along the lakeshore. Restaurants and shops line Lake Street and the first hotel in more than 50 years on Lake Minnetonka was built in 2017. While development in Wayzata has been ongoing, parklands and open space give Wayzata a small-town feel. Public docks provide the opportunity for all to enjoy lake living. Activities abound in winter as well with ice fishing, ice boating, and snowmobiling on the frozen bays. The Wayzata School district has nine elementary schools, three middle schools, and one high school.
